Gopher Athletes Powered Up at Stillwater Open Gym

On Friday, February 7, 2014, PowerUp, in partnership with the Stillwater School District, welcomed Gopher athletes to the open gym at Stillwater Junior High.

Gopher athletes Elle Arvesen, Julia Courter, Jennifer Larrick and Luke Mcavoy shot hoops, played floor hockey, tossed a football, and had a blast with over 100 kids from the community.  The athletes signed Gopher posters, greeted the children, and shared how they PowerUp.

Chomp, the PowerUp superhero, also made a guest appearance at the open gym and had a blast running around with the kids and Gopher athletes. He even challenged Gopher soccer player, Jennifer Larrick, to a push-up competition! Children gathered from around the gym to cheer on Jennifer and Chomp. After completing 25 push-ups, Jennifer decided to let Chomp win.

Gopher athlete Elle Arvesen, a graduate of Mahtomedi high school, who played both basketball and soccer in high school, organized a game of lightening with the athletes and kids. Elle was very excited to see such a great initiative in the St. Croix Valley and hopes to return to an open gym in the near future.

The Gopher Athletes also powered up by playing the PowerUp dice game, jumping rope and using the skip it. They also took the PowerUp Veggie Vote to help us elect the favorite veggies in our community!
